Nutrition

Contractors operate the 42 senior centers and nutrition sites located in our six county region. The nutrition program is central to the health and well being of older persons. The program not only provides a nutritious meal, but just as importantly, it provides for the social interaction that is critical to good mental and physical health. The contractors also prepare and deliver meals to the homes of the isolated elderly who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. These home delivered meals (meals on wheels) provide critical nutrition while allowing the delivery person to make daily contact with the home bound elderly person. In Fiscal Year 2004, our subcontractors provided 80,836 meals in our nutrition center and 138,578 meals delivered to the homes of the elderly.

Transportation

One of the key services to help our elderly maintain their independence is a reliable transportation service. Contractors provide transportation to seniors throughout the area by contracting with the Heart of Texas Rural Transit District (HOTRTD). Transportation is also provided to the general public under the Section 5311 Rural Public Transportation program.
